RANDY HAUGEN: Bobby Jenks on streak

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on baseball. Bobby Jenks hightailed it out of the White Sox clubhouse about as fast as he's been setting down batters lately. The

Chicago

closer retired the side in the ninth Friday night in the White Sox 5-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners, his 33rd save in 38 chances. He's set down 38 straight batters, tying David Wells' American League record set in 1998 with the New York Yankees. It's the fourth-longest streak in major league history.

RANDY HAUGEN: Who Got Bonds 756th ball

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on Barry Bonds. Matt Murphy's stopover in

San Francisco

included a pretty wild ride, and it wasn't on a cable car. The 21-year-old college student who grew up near Shea Stadium emerged from a mad scramble at

AT&T

Park

on Tuesday night with a bloodied face and the city's most-prized souvenir: the ball from Barry Bonds' record 756th home run. "I won the lottery," Murphy told The Daily News in a story posted on its Web site Wednesday. "I'm scraped up but nothing serious." Murphy said the ball was "under lock and key." "I'm going to be smart about what I do with it," he said. "Funny enough, I'm only keeping 51 percent of what the ball brings." Murphy said the rest would go to a friend who went with him to the game, wearing an Alex Rodriguez jersey.

RANDY HAUGEN: Wake Forest gets new coach

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on

Wake

Forest

. Dino Gaudio has taken over for Skip Prosser before. More than two decades ago, Gaudio replaced Prosser at a parochial high school in

West Virginia

and eventually led that team to a state title. On Wednesday,

Wake

Forest

chose Gaudio to again take Prosser's place, this time to replace his late mentor in the cutthroat Atlantic Coast Conference. "Just like this situation, he left me good players," Gaudio said. "Following him was a terrific tribute. He laid the foundation, set the table and it all worked out, and I hope the same thing happens here."

Wake

Forest

athletic director Ron Wellman, who signed Gaudio to a five-year contract, praised the 50-year-old Gaudio for his strength during the two weeks of grieving that followed Prosser's July 26 death from an apparent heart attack. While making such a long-term commitment to a coach with a career record of 68-124 might appear unusual, Wellman said he never considered hiring an interim coach.

RANDY HAUGEN: Cubs pull ahead

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on baseball. The Chicago Cubs are going places. Matt Murton raced home on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the ninth inning Wednesday night at Wrigley Field, sending the Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies and to the top of the NL Central. The Cubs, who were 8 1/2 games behind on June 23, finally overcame the Brewers.

Chicago

's win, coupled with the Mets' 8-5 win at

Milwaukee

, puts the Cubs a percentage point ahead of the Brewers. "You can't make too much out of it on the first of August," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "We've got a lot of baseball to play. We can't get caught up in it."

RANDY HAUGEN: Bell Resigns from Royals

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on baseball. Buddy

Bell

chose family over baseball on Wednesday, resigning as manager of the last-place Kansas City Royals effective at the end of the season. An emotional

Bell

, who will turn 55 on Aug. 27, announced the decision before

Kansas City

's game against the Minnesota Twins. He will join the Royals' front office in 2008 as a senior adviser to general manager Dayton Moore. "I had to make a choice between managing and my family,"

Bell

said, "and to me that's a no-brainer."

Bell

's nephew, Marine Lance Cpl. Tim Bell Jr., was killed by a roadside bomb in August 2005 in

Iraq

, and

Bell

said health concerns also played a part in his decision. Last September, he had surgery to remove a cancerous growth in his throat.

RANDY HAUGEN: Gulbis gets win

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on golf. If you haven’t heard of Natalie Gulbis you will now! She finally can be known for winning, too. Famous mostly for her looks through five-plus seasons on tour, Gulbis broke through Sunday, winning her first LPGA Tour title at the Evian Masters with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff with Jang Jeong of

South Korea

on Sunday. Jang and the 24-year-old American finished the fourth round tied at 4-under 284. Gulbis had a final round 70, and Jang birdied the last hole to finish with a 72. "Obviously it was meant to be for me," Gulbis said. "Before the playoff, I was very upset at myself because I felt like I had given away this tournament. I thought I needed to get to 7 under to win and I end up at, what, four? Going in today, I never thought that four under would have won this tournament."

RANDY HAUGEN: Parker’s reaction to ref scandal

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on basketball. Even the basketball players are surprised at this scandal! French basketball star Tony Parker on Wednesday expressed his "surprise" and "shock" at the NBA's alleged match fixing scandal involving referee Tim Donaghy. "For the moment we can't talk too much about it because we don't really know what happened exactly. "But I was surprised and shocked, I didn't think that it could still happen," said the San Antonio Spurs playmaker, who this year became the first European to be the most valuable player in the NBA finals. American daily, The New York Post, on Friday reported the FBI were investigating Donaghy, who supposedly worked with mobsters to fix margins and outcomes of NBA games to pay off gambling debts.

RANDY HAUGEN: Ref guilty of betting

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on basketball. A point-shaving scandal is an enormous problem in any sport. This one, which might involve an NBA referee, has the potential to permanently scar the league. The NBA acknowledged Friday the FBI is investigating Tim Donaghy for betting on games, including ones in which he officiated. "It's a shame," the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant said. "It's just unfortunate. ... Like I said, it's a very serious issue." According to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered thousands of dollars over the past two seasons.

RANDY HAUGEN: Sack Vick

Randy Haugen's focus on sports information is on Mike Vick. Roger Goodell met with animal welfare officials inside NFL headquarters Friday and about 50 people demonstrated outside, urging the NFL commissioner to suspend Michael Vick following his indictment on dogfighting charges. "Sack Vick!" chanted the demonstrators, organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, as they walked peacefully in front of the Park Avenue building. Many held dogs who had the "Sack Vick" signs on their backs and one woman brought a pit bull, the breed killed in the dogfighting operation the Atlanta quarterback is accused of sponsoring.
