Colombo DiSalvatore – Wal-Mart uses Facebook

This year, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. wants students heading to college to log on to Facebook to design their dorm room with their roommate. The world's largest retailer on Wednesday is launching the "Roommate Style Match" group on Facebook, a social networking site that has millions of college-age users, in the hopes of grabbing a larger chunk of back-to-school shopping dollars. Facebook users who join the Wal-Mart group will be able to take a quiz to determine their decorating style and get a list of "recommended products" they can buy at Wal-Mart to mesh their style with their roommate's.

Colombo DiSalvatore – Shrek Helps Profits

Colombo DiSalvatore business highlight topic today is on Viacom. Viacom Inc on Thursday posted a better-than-expected profit, boosted by DVD sales and the box office hit "Shrek The Third". The film division helped second quarter results with a string of theatrical hits that also included "Blades of Glory" and "Disturbia." The New York-based owner of MTV Networks, Paramount movie studios and Nickelodeon cable channels said its second quarter profit fell less than 1 percent to $434 million down from $437.3 million a year earlier. Earnings per share rose to 63 cents from 61 cents, as a result of a lower share count from a buyback authorization.

Colombo DiSalvatore – Kodak Posts Profit

Photography company Eastman Kodak Co. on Thursday said posted a net profit versus a year-ago loss, boosted by a gain from the sale of its health imaging unit. Kodak said its net profit was $592 million, or $2.06 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $282 million, or 98 cents a share. Revenue fell to $2.51 billion from $2.69 billion. Since late 2003, Kodak has focused on digital devices, hoping to outpace the drop in demand for film, historically its main revenue source. At the same time, it is reducing costs by cutting some 30,000 jobs and trimming manufacturing.

Colombo DiSalvatore – CVS Caremark profits double

Colombo DiSalvatore business highlight topic today is on CVS. Purchasing Caremark was a good thing for CVS. CVS Caremark Corp said on Thursday quarterly profit more than doubled, aided by the addition of Caremark's pharmacy benefits business and new stores. CVS, one of the largest U.S. Drugstore chains, bought Caremark, a pharmacy benefits manager, in March. Second-quarter profit rose to $723.6 million, or 47 cents per share, from $337.9 million, or 40 cents per share, a year earlier. CVS had forecast earnings of 44 cents to 47 cents per share, while analysts on average had expected 46 cents, according to Reuters Estimates.

Here’s another one…A major US toy maker is recalling 1.5 million Chinese-made toys because of high levels of lead in the paint. The recalled toys made for Mattel's Fisher-Price range include popular pre-school characters like Elmo and Big Bird along with dozens of other items. The recall comes amid heightened concern worldwide about the safety of China 's exports. Mattel said it had isolated two-thirds of the affected toys before they reached the shelves. In the United States, the Fisher-Price toys were sold nationwide between May and August.

Colombo DiSalvatore – Caterpillar Earning Plummet

Colombo DiSalvatore business highlight topic today is on Caterpillar. Caterpillar Inc), the world's top maker of earthmoving equipment, diesel engines and gas turbines, said on Friday quarterly earnings fell more than expected due to lower truck engine sales, weakness in North American construction markets and higher production costs. The results, which the company called disappointing, sent Caterpillar shares down more than 8 percent in morning trading and weighed on the whole market amid worry the profit miss might be the first in a series from the heavy equipment industry. But the consensus was that the issues holding back Caterpillar were largely internal.
